Pagebu on Music is coming to an end. I have discovered that there are more important things to write about other than music, and some things I want to share in another form, perhaps poetry and prose. So I will make this short and sweet and simply say, it's been fun. It's been real. Eric baby, you did your thang! Unlike Chrisette Michele and El DeBarge, who I was eagerly anticipating, you delivered a beautiful, soulful project that is fluid in hits from beginning to end. I'm shocked that the song Chrisette does with you,"Take It," is more soulful than all the tracks on "Let Freedom Reign" combined.

"Lost in Time" is Eric Benet's best effort to date. I've always been a fan of his debut project, "True to Myself," and have enjoyed selections he's recorded since then, like the gem "Sweet Dreams" on Wayman Tisdale's "Way Up" CD. In the same vein, I'm glad Eric kept it real and isn't selling out like the rest of the so-called R&B artists that have gone mainstream. (The list is too long to mention names here!) So thank you for the soul, Eric. Thank you for the soul.

And as for you Melanie Sims, who told you you knew good soul music? Clearly, you don't know the genre and need to resign.

20 of the Best Holiday Recordings Ever!!!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 160px; height: 160px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/__ivAPpKGjVc/TPU9MNLbthI/AAAAAAAAAIM/sIA_dRSibto/s320/Supremes.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5545405796081972754" />

So I've given you a list of some of my favorite holiday CDs, but in case you want to make a CD of your own and buy individual tracks from your favorite digital outlet, here are 25 of the best holiday recordings, in my opinion of course! I thought I'd give you some CD recommendations if you're kind of stumped or may not know exactly what's out there to choose from. I'm a soul music and jazz fan, so my selections will be coming primarily from those genres and range from contemporary artists to some of the legends who recorded fine product in my opinion. Here's a list of 12 of the best that I think will keep you satisfied from beginning to end, in no particular order, but the first two are definitely tops on my list.

1. "Snowflakes" - Toni Braxton (Gets my vote for the sexiest Christmas CD ever!)

2. "Merry Christmas" - Mariah Carey (This is gospel, pop, and everything in between!)

3. "Christmas, Love and You" - Will Downing (Another sensual take for the holidays)

4. "Christmas Fantasy" - Anita Baker (Anita's jazzy vocals go well with these tunes)

5. "One Family" - Kelly Price (Kelly brings the soul to Christmas)

6. "Christmas" - Kirk Franklin and the Family (If you need some contemporary gospel)

7. "Playboy's Latin Jazz Christmas: A Not So Silent Night" - Various Artists
(Contemporary latin rhythmic takes on classic holiday songs - Divine!)

8. "Jackson 5 Christmas Album" - The Jackson 5 (Classic!)

9. "A Christmas Gift for You From Phil Spector" - Various Artists
(Doo-Wop at its best)

10. "The Original Soul Christmas" - Various Artists (Soul music at its best)

11. "A Charlie Brown Christmas"- Vince Guaraldi Trio (Another classic!)

12. "Christmas Jollies" - The Salsoul Orchestra (A disco classic!)

Floetry is Dead. ( I will miss them!) Gone is Marsha. We devoted fans have the memories of "Floetic," "Floacism," and "Flo'Ology." Now it's time for "Floetic Soul."

This is grown folks' music. I'm very happy The Floacist, aka Natalie Stewart, released a seductive and uplifting collection of tunes that reminds you of the Floetry days yet unveils her own flavor and lets you know Floetry is a thing of the past.

Now I'm not gonna lie, I'm putting money on The Floacist succeeding and hope she outsells Marsha because in my opinion, she's the one with stage presence, sensuality, and artistry. I know some of you will disagree, but listen to "Floetic Soul" and leave me a comment and tell me if you differ.

My favorite tracks on this project are: "Breathe," "Need You," "You," "Alright Then" and of course, "Forever." "Floetic Soul" is pure sensuality and positivity, a refreshing musical retreat from a diminished music scene where the lyrics are all the same and bore me.

The Floacist proves that she is an artist in her own solo right. Good luck to you girl! Represent the lyricists, the evolutionists, and the woman who is not afraid to go bald and represent her femininity.

Ciara, What the Hell?!!!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 179px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/__ivAPpKGjVc/THDrLykfDlI/AAAAAAAAAHU/2C-KqfoPi2A/s320/C.I.A.R.A..jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5508160932060008018" />

Okay, I gave you some positivity with my independent soul artists, but now I've got to break it down a tad and talk about Ciara's "Ride" video. Now I may be a little late, but I just have to say, Ciara, what the hell?!!!

Just when I thought Beyonce's thick shaking ass was the ass the to see swirling around in a video, Ciara's teasing the viewer with her crotch, swirling and twirling her slim frame, and not leaving much to the imagination in that bathing suit thinly covered by the fur coat. Now here was a chick that I thought was the next Aaliyah. I was the loving the half-girly, half-tomboy image associated with the pretty face. Now as if it wasn't bad enough that "Fantasy Ride" was a a pop fiasco, it is clear that the "powers that be" in that silly corporate record industry have decided that Ciara needs to become the new freak toy of the industry. I mean, come on! Can the chick just dance and take us to the place where Janet left us?

Ciara, you don't need to grind so hard, baby! Some of us enjoy your smokin' choreography and like to leave something to the imagination. We already know you're a beautiful woman, but that grind was just plain ugly.

The Wait Was Worth It

<img style="float:right; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 200px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/__ivAPpKGjVc/THDmQ2yBQuI/AAAAAAAAAHE/Hu8wU9JnS0Q/s200/Adriana.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5508155521531724514" />

Adriana Evans is a vocalist I have adored since her self-titled debut featuring the single "Seeing is Believing." So I was pleasantly surprised when I did an iTunes search and discovered she put out a new CD called "Walking With the Night." Adriana, I have been waiting for a follow-up CD to "El Camino," and this CD can be summed up in five words -- The Wait Was Worth It.

My favorite tracks? "Surrender" is the ultimate dance jam. Love the hook.

"Astral Projection." What can I say? I just love to hear her riff it throughout a song.

"El Sol." Loved the original ("In the Sun") on her first CD, but this one takes it up a notch and gives it a new flavor.

"Suddenly." Hmmm. Deep. A new take on the affair song?

Now only if you would tour the East Coast, in particular New York City, Ms. Evans, and I'd be straight.

Preview Adriana Evans' CDs on iTunes

Avery*Sunshine is Divine

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 200px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/__ivAPpKGjVc/THDhrVF3UPI/AAAAAAAAAG8/vDHBC74ChBk/s200/averysunshine.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5508150478786482418" />

I knew the minute I saw this sister's photo on iTunes with the short 'do she had something deep to say. Avery*Sunshine is a human artist. What I mean by that is, she is not pretending to have a flawless image. She presents herself as a woman who knows she is prone to making human mistakes and wanting life to go her way as we are all human and wish for ourselves at some time or another. That is why I am feeling "Ugly Part of Me," a song about knowing when you've said or done the wrong thing in your lover's presence but are human enough to admit your mistake and acknowledge the temporary absence of beauty in your being.

Another song I love and can relate to is "All in My Head," a song about knowing when the delusional state of your mind may be blocking reality in how you view your mate. And who can't relate to "Pinin' "? This is another reality check about that lover who got away that you can't get out your head. And finally, "Today," when things just don't go your way and you feel like you're about to break. (Love the chat with mommy at the end. It makes me smile every time I hear it. I miss you, ma!)

So while the lyrics may sound like mini-thunderstorms, the music, the voice, and these songs are pure Sunshine.

Preview "Avery*Sunshine" on iTunes

This "Godchild" is Pure Joy!!!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 200px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/__ivAPpKGjVc/THDXqZEm94I/AAAAAAAAAG0/-3QNha7Seh4/s200/JoyJones.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5508139467558811522" />

I love discovering artists who are original and not afraid to express their individuality in a musical climate that has created cookie cutter images that are just plain boring. That is why I hope EVERYONE who loves R&B, soul, or just good damn music will listen to "Godchild" by Joy Jones. Better yet, BUY JOY JONES' "GODCHILD" CD!

Ms. Jones, the cover alone is simply divine, but I was sold the minute I heard such rhythmic tracks like "Promised Land" and "This Joy." I love the lyrics throughout this project, so inspirational for the Black Woman divine. "Beautiful" and "Glass Boxes" are pure gems that honor the Black Woman's physique. And for those on personal spiritual journeys, I recommend indulging in the lyrical content of "Nomad," "Constellations," and "Over," the latter being a song about dealing with a loved one's transition. I thank you for putting this wonderful project on iTunes. It has become a favorite of mine, and I listen to it practically EVERY DAY because it is so uplifting. And thank you for stepping out of the box musically and giving music listeners like me a reason to write and know that there are artists out there breathing new life into the music industry.

Give me some feedback people and let me know if you agree that Joy Jones is wonderful discovery.

Preview "Godhchild" on ITunes

Toni, Toni, Toni!!!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 142px; height: 200px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/__ivAPpKGjVc/TBhGt_15hyI/AAAAAAAAAGs/uvuUzLIEcdM/s200/ToniChair.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5483210302369138466" />

I must admit, at first I wasn't feeling Toni Braxton's latest CD, "Pulse," but I was sold on "Make My Heart" from day one. And Bille Woodruff, you are the boy! That video is hot!!! It's nice to see some real choreography and video direction for a change. And Toni. Girl! You're sexy as ever in that black catsuit! (Meow!)

There is something amazing about the "Pulse" CD. In comparison to most music being produced today, this CD contains REAL SONGS WITH REAL LYRICS!!! This is truly a grown folks' CD. And a word of advice to any man (or woman) out there who wants to know how to truly love a woman, I say, LISTEN TO THE LYRICS ON THIS ALBUM AND YOU'LL LEARN!!! (And listen to Chante Moore's "Love the Woman" as back-up and you'll be a pro!)

Now the highlights on this CD are: "Make My Heart" (can you say, repeat?), "Why Won't You Love Me?," "Hero," "Wardrobe," "Hands Tied," and "Pulse," but hey, just play it all the way through, let Toni serenade you, and you'll be fine.

And damn you, iTunes for all of those hot exclusive tracks! "The Wave" is a killer, but you can't buy it separately, and I had to have a physical copy of the album so if anyone out there has that track, can you send it to me, please?

In the meantime, check out my favorite video of the moment. Today, it's called "auto-tune," and frankly, I'm auto-tuned out.

It was cute for a minute with T-Pain, and worked on the a, a, a, a, a, alcohol jam with Jamie Foxx, but now it seems like EVERYBODY wants to be auto-tuned and do corny pop music and to me, it's starting to sound played out. I mean, Tyrese, what's up with you? Now YOU'VE gone pop and got auto-tuned when you have a soulful voice and can actually sing? Mary J., you don't need to be auto-tuned either. Give us another one of those "you're wrong!" songs and belt it from your diaphragm like you know how!

And music industry, stop having everybody do the same thing! Let the real singers sing. Let those who can't, dance. And can we please let auto-tune be a thing of the past?

Just a thought. Well if you do, let's reminisce together over some of those memorable tunes that kept us on the dance floor, that we couldn't get out of our heads, and that had some of the catchiest lyrics, albeit only a few words that may have been looped throughout the song. Here is my list of 20 House music classics. Note, House music, not Dance music or Techno music. DJ, mix these up at the club and see if anyone sits down! And again, no repeated artist, and this list is not in any particular order.

1. "Whores in This House" - Frank Ski (1992)
2. We live in such a pop and hip-hop world that this often forgotten genre doesn't get the props it deserves anymore. I want to keep it alive, the true jazz, that is, because like R&B artists, jazz has gone pop and many people believe that Kenny G is jazz. (And sorry people, Najee is not jazz either.) So, in no particular order, here is my list of the 10 best jazz albums of all-time. I hope it helps you expand your music collection.

1. "Journey in Satchidananda" - Alice Coltrane (1970)
2. "A Love Supreme" - John Coltrane (1964)
3. "Porgy and Bess" - Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong (1958)
4. "Jazz in Film" - Terence Blanchard (1999)
5. "Let Freedom Ring!" - Denys Baptiste (2003)
6. "A New Perspective" - Donald Byrd (1963)
7. "Speak No Evil" - Wayne Shorter (1964)
8. "Mingus, Mingus, Mingus, Mingus, Mingus" - Charlie Mingus (1963)
9. Now by Contemporary Soul, I'm talking about anything recorded in the 90s to present, and soul, to me, was personified in the 70s, thus the reason for artists of that decade comprising the previous list. So, I'm sticking to 10, and once again, not in any particular order and will not repeat, and am considering the albums I feel you can listen to without skipping a track. I hope you agree.

1. "Who is Jill Scott?: Words and Sounds Vol. 1" - Jill Scott (2000)
2. "Worldwide Underground" - Erykah Badu (2003)
3. "Free" - Chico Debarge (2003)
4. "Self Portrait" - Lalah Hathaway (2008)
5. "Signs of Life" - Dionne Farris (2007)
6. "Flo'Ology"- Floetry (2005)
7. As things come up, I will write about them, the things that move me deep in my spirit. But as I am also moved by things of the past in the world of music, I will share my thoughts on them as well.

So as I stated in my first post of this year, "The Future of Pagebu on Music," I believe in supporting the legends. To be true to my word, here is a list of 12 of the best soul albums of all time, in my opinion. These are albums you can listen to from the first track to the last. These are must-haves if you truly dig soul music. I didn't want to repeat artists, which is why I stopped the list at 12, despite some making such beautiful music several decades and the first three being composed by Curtis Mayfield. They are listed not in any particular order, but please, have a listen (www.lala.com is a great site) and let me know if you agree.

1. "Superfly" (Soundtrack) - Curtis Mayfield (1972)
2. "Claudine" (Soundtrack) - Gladys Knight & The Pips (1974)
3. "Sparkle" (Soundtrack) - Aretha Franklin (1976)
4. "Ask Rufus" - Rufus Featuring Chaka Khan (1977)
5. "Black Moses" - Isaac Hayes (1971)
6. "What's Goin' On" - Marvin Gaye (1971)
7. "Songs in the Key of Life" - Stevie Wonder (1976)
8. "Gratitude" - Earth, Wind & Fire (1975)
9. "For You" - Prince (1978)
10. "The Boss" - Diana Ross (1979)
11. "Express" - B.T. Express (1974)
12. "Everything is Everything" - Donny Hathaway (1970)

Everybody's Gone Pop

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 116px; height: 116px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/__ivAPpKGjVc/S8jKh8YNs6I/AAAAAAAAAGc/YA5hsXCfpmM/s200/images.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5460837232678908834" />

Usher. Alicia Keys. Damn, even Vivian Green. It seems like everybody that used to do such great R&B, music that spoke to your soul, has gone pop! Can we get back to the soul, please, minus the lyrics referencing infidelity?

Can it be disputed that "Confessions," "That's What It's Made For," and "Nice and Slow" are not classic Usher songs? With only a few exceptions like "Here I Stand" and "Lifetime," the rest of the "Here I Stand" CD is Usher going pop...hard. And never mind "Raymond vs. Raymond." Can you say, pop goes the weasel? He gives us "Papers" making us think we're getting another fine product like "Confessions" then he delivers a CD with no soul, no R&B, just pop, pop, pop!

What happened to Alicia Keys' good ol' days with songs that spoke to the spirit like "Fallin," "Diary," and "If I Ain't Got You?" I knew when the braids were gone and the hair turned straight what was up.

And Vivian Green, can you take us on an "Emotional Rollercoaster" again, please?

And finally, Mary J. has done the pop thang in a major way. Has anyone other than me felt that she should've left Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love" and "Stairway to Heaven" alone? I'm only a fan of covers when they're done well, like when soul artists make pop or rock songs soulful, but Mary J., doing pop versions of these classics was not a good move.

If it's not Justin Timberlake and Robin Thicke thinking their the white versions of Marvin Gaye replete with bad falsettos, then it's soulful artists making the transition to the pop world and leaving the soul behind to record mediocre songs. My thing is this, do what you do and do it well. You're all talented in your own ways, just be your true selves and let that talent shine.

And when are these music executives going to stop being greedy thinking they can sell more records if they mold their top-selling artists into pop molds of clay?

Maxwell, What the Hell?!!!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 96px; height: 135px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/__ivAPpKGjVc/S8jEtRHqflI/AAAAAAAAAGU/cMM2pcIADpU/s200/Maxwell.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5460830830155431506" />

Just when I begin to accept that the 'fro is gone! Just when I start diggin' "BLACKsummers'night" to the point that "Bad Habits" and "Cold" stay on repeat. Just when I get over not being able to attend the concert you did with Chrisette Michele, I get excited when I see you touring with Jill Scott. Then I'm torn because you add a date at the Garden with Badu. Then my heart is crushed when I see the top ticket price is $256.50 at both shows. Maxwell, what the hell? You're breaking my heart all over again! Please, bring back the 'fro!

Baby, I miss that falsetto! It's not as sweet as it was on the Mellosmoothie mix of "Sumthin' Sumthin'." Nevertheless, I was ready to see you, baby, you and one of my girls. Why can't you have a menage-a-tois, with Jill and Badu on the same bill with you in the middle and bring that top ticket price down so I can hear that sexy voice when it speaks and look up at you with naughty thoughts while you perform and long for that 'fro again?

Is it just me, or is anyone else having a hard time during this recession? Maxwell, baby, I like ya, but I've got many other things I could do with $256.50, and buying a ticket way up in the air at Madison Square Garden is not one of them. If I can't see you up close, then I'll just listen to your sweet voice on my ipod instead.

Written with love.

The Return of the Bootay!!!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 200px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/__ivAPpKGjVc/S8i3T9wEzLI/AAAAAAAAAGM/WrI07iceQs0/s200/BaduWomb.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5460816101808327858" />

All right! I finally have some inspiration to return to this blog and it would be Erykah Badu, or shall I say her bootay, in particular, that got me back on track!

By now, with all the controversy, you have seen the "Window Seat" video. Now I've been reading some really unsavory things online about people's opinion of it and her, so Ms. Bootay, better known as Badu, I just want to say, go on with yourself!

There's no shame in my game. When I first watched it, I was hoping you would take it all off, but when you did, my mouth dropped open and I had to shut it and call myself cornbread!

Nonetheless, I love the artistic message and the retro evolution at the end, replete with the beads. I love the use of the JFK audio and the guts to film where he was assassinated. But most importantly, I love the bootay! I was like, damn! I give female props where they are due, and Ms. Badu, the bootay is nice!!!

But I shan't be so shallow. "The Return of the Ankh" is a nice comeback. I must admit, I think I'm still more partial to "New Amerykah Part One..." because it's got that Curtis Mayfield, socio-political, tell-it-like-it-T-I-is, thang going on, but I must say, I am feeling "Out My Mind, Just in Time," "Agitation," "Fall in Love (Your Funeral), "Incense," and of course, "Window Seat," 'cause I can relate to all these depending on my mood and what I choose to recall of my past relationships at any given point in time.

But Badu, for real though, what's up with "You Loving Me (Session)?"

And in case you haven't seen the video, check it out and comment for yourself.

The Infamous Window Seat Video

The Future of Pagebu on Music

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 199px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/__ivAPpKGjVc/S0FqraIfUqI/AAAAAAAAAGE/DCxRa6f7BJ4/s200/globe-europe.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5422732720312636066" />

Well, it's been some time since I've posted anything, so as 2010 has entered, I must sadly say that Pagebu on Music will be retired as it existed. As I have grown very disappointed in today's music scene, I believe that I would only be able to continue this blog if I wrote about the legends, or that rare, hot CD that gets released in this day and age. As a result, the future of Pagebu on Music may be in jeopardy and replaced with a blog of a totally different scope. As I try to decide whether to retire this blog, I strongly encourage you to support good music when you can find it, especially classic titles by artists such as Rufus Featuring Chaka Khan, Gladys Knight, Michael Jackson, Bob Marley, Pharoah Sanders, Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, Teena Marie, Phyllis Hyman, Anita Baker, Will Downing, Stevie Wonder, George Michael, The Police, Marvin Gaye, Alice Coltrane, and Isaac Hayes, to name a few.

So stay posted. This blog may have a future after all.

Brady Delivers

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/__ivAPpKGjVc/SNFlOXZI5zI/AAAAAAAAAEI/I0dEST79qCk/s200/51AyRBbvL5L._SL160_AA115_.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5247086338335369010" />

It's a little retro, very soulful, and definitely one for your collection. Wayne Brady has finally put out his solo CD, and frankly I wish he could outsell Jamie Foxx's double platinum effort about sex, sex, and more sex with a few rappers thrown in. Well Wayne's CD, "A Long Time Coming," is justly titled, has no rappers (except Wayne on the party stomper "Back in the Day" (one of my favorites), and is about love...sometimes, about love that has come to an end, like "You and Me," clearly about his recent divorce.

Nonetheless, Wayne's refreshing takes on the Beatles' "Can't Buy Me Love" (turned into a ballad and a true gem on this CD), Stevie Wonder's "All I Do" (well done, Wayne!) and Sam Cooke's "A Change is Gonna Come" are alone worth buying this CD. And yes, he actually puts his own stank on these songs and does not try to imitate the originators, unlike a lot of artists doing cover songs today. (I won't name names, but you know who you are, fakers!) The lead song, "Ordinary," isn't bad either. Loveliness can be found on "Sweetest Berry." That should get radio play. Kudos to Wayne, a man with a great voice.

My only hope is Concord Music Group will support this album and help put it on the charts in a good spot. Wayne needs to open up for some folks on tour, Maxwell perhaps?

It's been "a long time coming" since some really nice music not focused on the booty has been recorded by a man. Is the face of R&B starting to change?

Anthony's Got Flavor and Something to Savor

You could put Anthony David in the company of Southern vocalist Anthony Hamilton, but I think this brother can hold his own. "Acey Duecy" is a fine compilation of Southern Soul at its best, with lyrics that will give its listeners something to savor.

Anthony's not all about infidelity like so many other R&B singers. He's actually about getting his freak on with that one special Georgia Peach and trying to make a relationship last, as is evident on the song "Words" with India.Arie. You've gotta love this video, so check it out and let me know what you think. It is music and a visual for the soul.

And if your relationship isn't working out these days, give this song a listen and get creative and patch things up! Tell your mate "Pagebu" and Anthony David influenced that truce.

And Anthony, I'm loving that nose ring! Retro never goes out of style...or beautiful male voices for that matter.

video.umrg.com/anthonydavid/words/quicktime.asp

Loving This Woman

Finally! Chante Moore has a new solo project! And this one is for the heart. "Love the Woman" is Chante as we all know and love her, a songstress who sings about love, but what makes this project special is that this CD cuts to the core of some REAL issues in love - and they're not all pretty. (Hmmm. Are Kenny and Chante having marital problems? Stop prying, Pagebu!)

One of my personal favorites is a song called "My Eyes." For anyone who has ever been in a relationship with someone that possesses eyes that cannot lie, this song reveals what they mean at critical times in the relationship. "Always Gonna Be Something" urges couples to stay together because, the truth is, if we don't get it right with our present mates, we're gonna come face to face with them again in a new relationship. They'll just have a different name but will act the same. "It Ain't Supposed to Be This Way" is about when love starts looking like pain.

So Chante fans, if you're ready to face love head on, this is the album for you. And for Chante's exploration in honesty and singing songs that cut to the core of when relationships go wrong, I have to say, I'm loving this woman.

Lalah, Lalah, Lalah!!!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/__ivAPpKGjVc/SEZI0FncnZI/AAAAAAAAADs/_2ZZ_YC8VOk/s200/Lalah.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5207930078798585234" />

It is always refreshing when a talented artist makes a thought-provoking CD that is beautiful in content, vocal delivery, and lyrical and musical composition. While poignant with each note she sings from her divine gift, I hope that one day, just like Mary J. Blige and Chante Moore, Lalah will be able to sing songs about finding love and keeping it.

Then again, aren't we all searching for that, or am I the only one?

Check out www.germuse.com soon for a Lalah Hathaway page. I am very disappointed in his (or perhaps his label's?) decision to "assimilate" his sound. What is up with soul singers? Why is that after a few albums, they start making pop songs that are so demeaning to their beautiful, soulful voices and degrade their sounds? I've seen this happen time and time again. Hell, even Usher's doing it on "Here I Stand" (and if "Love in This Club" is not pop, I don't know what is). Nonetheless, I think this is Lyfe's worse CD, and wish this soulful man would have continued telling his life story and made more songs like "Never Never Land" instead of opting for "change."

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://pagebu.blogspot.com/2008/05/lyfe-sucks-period.html' title='Lyfe Sucks. Maybe it has something to do with age. First Janet needs "discipline" like she hasn't been out of control long enough, and now Madonna teams with Justin Timberlake and Timbaland on one of the wackest so-called dance records I've ever heard. (Can someone tell me why they only have 4 minutes to save the world 'cause I really don't get the madness.)

Crotch open, something in your mouth, and more atrocious songs for the kiddies at 49. Madonna, come on already!!! I thought you were evolving so nicely with "Ray of Light" and "Confessions on a Dance Floor." Now you put out this? Why didn't you hire one of those great foreign producers like you have in recent years to give you a distinctive sound and not a Timbaland and Neptunes sound?

Madonna, come on!!!

Mariah, Retire!!!

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/__ivAPpKGjVc/SBZBQgV-xvI/AAAAAAAAACs/nkJifbGG8Ng/s320/Mariah.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5194410972034287346" />

Okay, so "E=MC2" is out, and frankly, I'm not impressed. I mean, how gullible are fans nowadays? Don't they know rehashed material when they hear it? "Touch My Body" is not original. It sounds like something I've heard before but can't put my finger on. It probably has something to do with the fact that it was produced by Jermaine Dupri, whose sound, when it comes to ballads is sooooo predictable and repetitive at this point in his career. Sorry Janet!

I've been tired of Mariah ever since I realized that her breasts got awfully big over the years, and she insists on trying to play the cute role and wear tight things when she, in my opinion, is not sexy. She's not really that cute, either. But it is the voice that I admired, back when "Vision of Love" brought her to the public realm.

Nonetheless, she is the last of the Mohigans, the last of the superstars with clout and quality albums behind their name. (The Mohigans also includes Madonna, Janet, and Whitney, although, the latter may already be in the pasture.)

Despite the fact that she can still go multi-platinum and currently holds the record for having the most number one singles, let's face it, the pipes ain't the same. (She doesn't hit those high notes anymore. Am I the only one taking notice?) I also believe that Mariah needs to take a break. Hell, between her and Beyonce, they are two people who don't know how to go somewhere and sit down so that fans can miss them awhile.

So unless the voice comes back full blast, the breast confession is rendered, and she stops having cheesy hit songs under Jermaine Dupri's production hand, I have one recommendation: MARIAH, RETIRE!!!

Ray J - R&B's Latest Double Standard

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/__ivAPpKGjVc/SA576wV-xuI/AAAAAAAAACk/MJWvcjwW1D4/s320/RayJ.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5192223669744486114" />

I am really tired of male R&B singers, and rappers for that matter, engaging in sexual acts and being rewarded with success or awards (i.e., R Kelly) instead of jail time or a ruined career. Even so-called R&B singer Justin Timberlake catapulted to even bigger fame in the R&B industry after being the one responsible for the infamous "wardrobe malfunction" Janet Jackson experienced. And now...there's Ray J.

"Sexy Can I" is receiving extensive airplay and is the number one ringtone on iTunes. He even had the number R&B/Hip-Hop album on Billboard's chart last week with his latest release "All I Need." I guess that sex tape and his endowed member helped his career tremendously.

But my thing is this: Why is it that women are ridiculed and scandalized and have to recover ten times what they accomplished when R Kelly and Ray J and myriad other males become sex symbols? Kim Kardashian may have a show on TV, but she also has a tarnished image. Ray J, on the other hand, has adoring fans.

When are fans going to wise up and either applaud the women as well or let the guys feel a little heat? I guess the sad fact is, when it comes to sexual acts, men always get the glory...unless they are not built like Ray J.

It's Gonna Be A Live Nation

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/__ivAPpKGjVc/R_1Bjt5mCfI/AAAAAAAAACc/ZYHqfyGJti0/s320/Live+Nation.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5187374427673070066" />

First Madonna. Then U2. Now Jay-Z. These are just a few of the artists who are going to make big bucks over the course of the next 10 to 12 years through Live Nation. Artists like Madonna and Jay-Z are leaving the majors and signing on with the soon-to-be extremely wealthy concert promotion company with deals that consist of things such as selling their merchandise, backing their concerts with dollars, and in Jay's case, money to start a business venture. My question is, while all of that may sound great, why would artists of their caliber commit to a company so long?

Better yet, why not start their own business ventures and just seek endorsement money for their tours from a company like Live Nation? And even more important, why does Jay-Z need a $20 million advance? Isn't he rich enough?

These kind of deals are just another example of the rich getting richer. I just wonder, given the state of the music industry, if they will be that profitable in the end.

The State of the Music Industry

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/__ivAPpKGjVc/R_KcB1j-HxI/AAAAAAAAACU/XWp-4ldNvgQ/s320/George+Michael.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5184377676428615442" />

Since there isn't much going on in terms of hot music right now, I just wanted to say that I hope things get better. I am presently working on my colloquy (Master's Thesis) about how the industry is really going down hill with each decade. There is no originality anymore, and I don't have the impulse to buy music like I used to. (Maybe that's a good thing. I'll have more money in my checking account...not!)

Concert prices are ridiculous, so I guess there will be a few artists I just won't get to see before I die, like Madonna, Tina Turner, Michael Jackson, and George Michael. Speaking of which, why is he charging $254.50 for tickets when he comes to Madison Square Garden? George, I like you, but I don't like you that much!

And I really wanted to see him too! He's such a handsome man with a velvet voice! I guess I'll have to watch my DVD collection of him and listen to my CDs instead.

Music industry! This is not the way to make up the deficit you have in CD purchases! Artists! Stop charging these asinine amounts for fans to come and see you! Music is the saving grace for many, but now it's just becoming insanely expensive to get a little bit of basic entertainment.

That's it. I'm done.

Ms. Kelly, What Have You Done?!!!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/__ivAPpKGjVc/R9cjk73fgyI/AAAAAAAAACM/EyNs8XAQRpM/s320/KellyRo.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5176645414138381090" />

Take a good look at this picture, folks, because it'll be the last time you see Ms. Kelly this way.

First it was the hair. Ever since her sophomore project, "Mama's Gun," it's been apparent that she is not making records to sell CDs or to please a particular audience. Erykah Badu makes music because she has a lot to say about the state of the world.

Gone may be her trademark wraps when she first debuted, introducing her fans to "Baduizm," but perhaps there is a reason Erykah has chosen to unwrap herself. Just one listen to her latest effort, "New Amerykah, Pt. 1: 4th World War," and one can see that Erykah is in touch with the disparity of the classes, racism, and senseless political relations, and had to uncover that head so she could sing about it and help her race attain solidarity in the process. (Love how she stuck her name into the title.)

Without a doubt, this is one of the best soul albums of all time, definitely on the level of the legend, Curtis Mayfield. (Badu even incorporates him into her verses as a sample, clearly paying homage to a man she is trying to emulate.) It shares the social consciousness of Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On," only difference is, Badu clearly knows what time it is.

I have to applaud Badu for her boldness in lyrical form on "Master Teacher," a song that I would not do justice to if I were describe it now. (I strongly recommend giving it an intense listen if you own the album or are curious about it's lyrical content.) I also love her throwback to 70s music and the blaxploitation period on the intro and outro of this thought-provoking project.

Artists like Erykah Badu are rare in this day and age because sex, sex, and more sex seems to be the way to get radio airplay and sustain a career. It is up to true music fans, however, to seek and demand music with alternative messages. There's nothing wrong with using our brains to think and analyze the world we live in, right?

Sharon's Got Dap!!!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/__ivAPpKGjVc/R7tdgFcghEI/AAAAAAAAABc/XjVgk1WhbkU/s320/Sharon+%26+Dap.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5168827803136721986" />
If you weren't at the Beacon Theatre on February 16, 2008, you missed a funky good time! It's been a long time coming, but Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings are finally getting the recognition they deserve.

Not competing with today's sounds, filled with technology and tracks covered with mediocre voices "sweetened" with Pro-Tools, Sharon Jones is a true vocalist, who gives her audience nothing but soul in every note. Her band, The Dap-Kings, deliver the funk and musicianship a la The JB's.

If you've never seen James Brown perform, or maybe miss those legendary performances, check out his female counterpart, Sharon Jones. On her latest record, "100 Days, 100 Nights," her voice resonates with each lyric from the title track and throughout the feel-good project, but it is in concert that this woman soars.

Don't believe me? Is it just me, or did Cirque du Soleil cheapen some of the greatest music of all time, the Beatles' "A Day in the Life," with a display that only the most artistic would understand? Is it just me, or have we hit an all-time low when Song of the Year is a song about refusing treatment for substance abuse? (Apparently, it's not just me because Natalie Cole thought Amy Winehouse didn't deserve that award either, considering the lyrics. Sorry to Carrie Underwood's songwriters because you deserved it. "Before He Cheats" was pure genius. Then again, "Rehab" was too, just a bad message. Did I just contradict myself?)

Is it just me, or did Herbie Hancock make the upset of the year with his Album of the Year win? Don't get me wrong, I love Herbie to death, but for the first jazz win ever in this category, should it really have been "The Joni Letters"? Yes, it's a nice album, but I think "Gershwin's World" (another Herbie CD) was better. Frankly, I was hoping Amy would have had a clean sweep. I think she actually deserved it, considering her competition.

I could go on and on and on about the 50th Grammy Awards celebration, but I think I'll start wrapping it up. One quick note, however. Why were a majority of the main categories not announced on air? No R&B, no pop. And really, did we need to see Kanye? He's such a media hog and even tried to get respect at the expense of his dead mother. I would have much rather seen Prince or Chaka Khan give acceptance speeches, although they were both upsets. "Funk This" was not the best R&B album in my book, but I love ya, Chaka! (Did I contradict myself yet again?) And Prince did not deserve best male R&B performance for "Future Baby Mama." If "Adore" was in the category, or "Purple Rain," I would have been all for a Prince win.

Who did deserve to win? The Clark Sisters. "Blessed and Highly Favored" is truly a great gospel song, and "LIve-One Last Time" was a hot-to-death gospel CD. So the Grammys got that right. I was also pleasantly surprised to see Common win, albeit with Kanye, Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group for "Southside," and Jill Scott and Lupe Fiasco win for Urban/Alternative Performance. Although I didn't review the other nominees, it's always great when talented people who don't commercialize their lyrics or personas win. So two other right votes for the Grammys!

But what was up with Patti Austin winning Best Jazz Album? That Gershwin project (unlike Herbie's) kind of sucked.

Okay. I promise. I'm done.

A Cello Rondo

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/__ivAPpKGjVc/R6njuEan7KI/AAAAAAAAAAM/d49DtXcVc_U/s320/Cello.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5163908828355882146" />
Who would think such an eccentric looking man could make such beautifully rhythmic music? If you haven't seen "A Cello Rondo: Amazing Video of a Song Composed Entirely of 37 Cello Parts," I strongly suggest you check it out. Putting the video aside, "A Cello Rondo" will leave you awe-stricken. This is a classical piece composed by Ethan Winer that exudes creativity, replete with a melancholy change halfway through the six-minute-plus composition.

Now don't get me wrong, the video is far from amazing. It's quite quirky, in fact. Seeing, however, the composer's dexterity on the cello is breath-taking. I was surprised that some of the instrumentation was composed entirely on a cello and not with additional string or percussion instruments. When watching the video, Winer helps one see how his work came to life, and is a great supplement for any unbelievers out there. I would have been one if I did not see the video.

So if you're looking for a great piece of music to listen to, check out "A Cello Rondo." And Mr. Winer, if you're reading this, I'd love for you to make your track available to iTunes. I'd gladly purchase it for ninety-nine cents.

Dionne's Back!!!

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/__ivAPpKGjVc/R6nlLUan7LI/AAAAAAAAAAU/loeW0LHopuc/s320/Dionne.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5163910430378683570" />
Nothing warms my palate like the return of an artist that has been gone for years. That is how I felt about Anita Baker's return, and always feel when Janet drops a new CD; but there's something different that gets boiling inside of me when it's an artist that is outspoken and innovative. Dionne Farris is such an artist.

She first came on the scene with the "extended family" rap group Arrested Development and sang the lyrics to the hook of "Tennessee" with such soul. ("Won't you help me.") Then she went solo and had the big hit "I Know," a pop ditty from her CD "Wild Seed - Wild Flower." (If you haven't heard it, it is a gem!) Now she's back, 13, yes, thirteen years after "Wild Seed..." And she sounds better than ever.

What is it about Dionne Farris that I love so much? Maybe it is her brashness via her lyrical content. On "Wild Seed..." she wasn't afraid to sing about being sexually abused or growing as a woman. On her return CD, "For Truth if Not Love," she admits to making the mistake of getting involved with a married man. While pondering the meaning of this title, I almost feel like Dionne is saying to her fans, 'This album represents what I felt I needed to say at this point in my life. I deliver it to you because it represents my truth, if not love for the art of music...true, creative expression.'

If you love soulful vocalists, funky music, and lyrics that speak the truth and could only be written from a deep place found in one's soul, treat yourself to Dionne Farris' "For Truth if Not Love." For it speaks one woman's truth, if not her love of her craft. It exposes a woman, deep at her core.

Variety Please?

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/__ivAPpKGjVc/R6pAv0an7QI/AAAAAAAAAA8/MjQ5rGHm3G8/s320/Ella.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5164011113002036482" />
Give me Ella, Alice, and Sarah any day over Diana Krall, Kenny G, and Chris Botti. I'm talking about a return to real jazz, not the watered-down impressions that lack variety in this modern-day world, compliments of stations like CD 101.9 under the genre heading "Smooth Jazz." While some of it is cool (like Boney James who makes it both soulful and sensual), a majority of it is a total rip-off, in my opinion.

There's nothing like being at home with a snifter containing Amaretto in one hand while incense and candles set the mood for a relaxing bath while Ella Fitzgerald sings, ever so smoothly, "You're My Thrill." No one could have been more creative in blending sounds of the Eastern world with jazz than Alice Coltrane, wife of John, on her groundbreaking album, "Journey Into Satchidananda." (I dare you to sit down and philosophize to that!) And have you heard Sarah Vaughn's version of the Gershwin classic, "Summertime"? Simply bliss, I tell ya. Simply bliss.

I guess the other serious music (with classical being the one that takes the title traditionally) has lost its place in modern-day society, only to be replaced by artists that all do the same thing. While the music they performed was similar, no one can say that Nat King Cole sounded like Frank Sinatra or Billie Holliday sounded like anyone other than herself. While Cassandra Wilson and Dianne Reeves do their thing today, in very different ways, I would love to ask the contemporary jazz musicians a burning question: Can we get more variety please? Thank you.

Who Stole the Soul?

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/__ivAPpKGjVc/R6o8RUan7OI/AAAAAAAAAAs/OvtwgnMSbsA/s320/jb1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5164006190969515234" />
Is it just me, or are there any other R&B music fans out there that have been wondering who stole the soul? While the trick with the mike was cute in the "Promise" video, can Ciara do some vocal tricks as well? And Janet. My girl Janet. Her beauty can't be denied, but for her to be a veteran, why do most of her recordings contain music that's louder than her voice?

Robbers of R&B, I encourage you to please bring back the soul! Record labels, I beckon you, to please invest in the careers of the women who encapsulate soul in their bones, without the digital tricks of today's recording process. I'm talking about women like Chaka Khan, Gladys Knight, and Patti Labelle, who have all been dropped from major labels to make room for the young'uns of today.

And for the Ne-Yos, Lloyds, and Marques Houstons: there is only one true king in R&B that you all seem to think you are both vocally and on the dance floor. His name is Michael jackson. And like Christians and Jesus, I am waiting for his return, so he can show you how both are really done.

A Hip-Hop Commentary

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/__ivAPpKGjVc/R6o_ZEan7PI/AAAAAAAAAA0/VJp7A4OUYJU/s320/TheMike.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5164009622648384754" />
Okay, so Imus is an idiot who got fired for being a racist, but should the Hip-Hop community be under fire for what he said?

Here's the thing. The language in Hip-Hop and the misogyny and "glamour" of the alleged pimp game that it portrays have been going on for over a decade now. Who cares if they are going to clean up their act now that Imus made some lousy comments about African-American women? I mean, he's wrong and the Hip-Hop community's been wrong, so why now?

Hasn't the damage of the Hip-Hop community been done? Hasn't there been too many casualties in Hip-Hop prior to Imus? And most importantly, what does Imus' comments have to do with Hip-Hop? The recent Hip-Hop summit and Al Sharpton's revocation of an award that was being given to L.A. Reid are just like the current name of this genre and most of its messages: backwards and just plain dumb.

A colleague of mine made an interesting point about the whole Hip-Hop debate under the Imus attack: Change starts within the community. Hip-Hop should have been cleaned up long before now and needs to return to its original roots where songs with real messages about urban life like "The Message" and "New York, New York" reigned supreme. But no, in the meantime, and over a decade too late I might add, there's talk of cleaning up the messages in the music.

Hip-Hop, it's too late for that. Clean up your community first.

Am I right, or am I wrong?

Ok...

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/__ivAPpKGjVc/R6nmHEan7MI/AAAAAAAAAAc/MaNdGlqF2wo/s320/OK+Go.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5163911456875867330" />
What's in a name? Mystery, I'd say, when it comes to the group names of Pop stars. There's Panic! At the Disco (huh?) and I didn't know a disco still existed in this day and age. (Why not Panic! At the Club, to keep up with the times?) Kings of Leon is interesting, but are they royalty? My favorite of all would have to be OK Go. Not sure what it means, but I have a theory about this one...

Perhaps the guys constantly met with A&R reps or other industry types that wanted to hear them play. Perhaps they didn't have an official name for the group. Perhaps after asking the group what their name was or what they were going to play, the industry rep said, "Okay, go." And the band played. If I heard that repeatedly and didn't have a name for my group, that just might stick and fit.

While I don't always get the names of some of today's popular groups, I always try to figure out what could have been going through the group member's minds when they decided on their name. I happen to like each of these groups, and while quirky at first, I ended up loving the treadmill concept OK Go used in the "Here We Go Again" video. When I first saw it, I said to myself, "Ok..." After seeing it again, I replied, "Ok." And after watching a live MTV performance, I said what my ficticious A&R rep would've said, "Ok, Go!"

And the pun is defiinitely intended.

R&B, Blue-Eyed Style

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/__ivAPpKGjVc/R6nmzkan7NI/AAAAAAAAAAk/fUT2wkMrNE4/s320/Ol+Rehab.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5163912221380046034" />
There was a time when artists like Chaka Khan, Earth, Wind, and Fire, and Gladys Knight ruled the R&B charts. Today, the artists who grace the charts in this genre include Joss Stone, Justin Timberlake, and Robin Thicke. What happened to the legends? Has R&B lost its soul or has it taken on a new flavor?

Don't get me wrong, I think anyone with a soulful voice regardless of their race should take a stab at R&B, but what happens when an artist like Justin Timberlake is "taking the place" of, say, Joe, or Musiq on the R&B chart when he also dominates the Pop chart? Do artists like Joe and Musiq receive equal treatment? I think not. Likewise, has the industry gone too far when Robin Thicke's song, "Lost Without You" dominates the #1 position on Billboard's Top R&B/Hip-Hop Song chart and the leading R&B radio airwaves? While R&B is making way for these blue-eyed soul singers, what extension is being given to artists like N'Dambi or M.D. West or Conya Doss, "traditional" R&B singers who have received no airplay? In my opinion, Joss, Justin, and Robin (as well as Amy Winehouse) are taking spots that "belong" to them.

All I'm saying is this, when artists like Bad Brains, Living Colour, and Fishbone receive substantial airplay and support by the Rock community, then, and only then, should artists like Joss Stone, Justin Timberlake, and Robin Thicke receive Grammys in the R&B category, have #1 R&B hits, and receive R&B recognition. After all, everyone has to pay their dues, but these artists were simply given them.
